One Needy Family, One Giving Community

Kutting Edge Salon and Spa sponsored a fundraiser for a local Cache Valley family. The family had lost their home and all possessions in a fire just before the holidays and the Kutting Edge girls wanted to help. With assistance from many others in the community, the family received numerous donations to help them get back on their feet.

We at the Kutting Edge were so overwhelmed with gratitude for all of the wonderful giving people who donated to the family. We would like to extended our appreciation to everyone.

How to give a Self Breast Exam

Breast Cancer is a scary phenomenon that is becoming more and more common. We ladies need to protect ourselves by doing monthly self-breast exams.

Here are some tips on how check yourself.

DO-IT-YOURSELF MONTHLY BREAST SELF-EXAM
Provided as a Service From Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories

IN THE SHOWER
Raise one arm. With fingers flat, touch every part of the breast, gently feeling for a lump or thickening. Use your right hand to examine your left breast, your left hand for your right breast.

BEFORE A MIRROR
With arms at your sides, then raised above your head, look carefully for changes in the size, shape, and contour of each breast. Look for puckering, dimpling, or changes in skin texture.
Gently squeeze both nipples and look for discharge.

LYING DOWN
Place a towel or pillow under your right shoulder and your right hand behind your head. Examine your right breast with your right hand.
Fingers flat, press gently in small circles, starting at the outermost top edge of your breast and spiraling in toward the nipple. Examine every part of the breast. Repeat with left breast.
With your arm resting on a firm surface, use the same circular motion to examine the underarm area. This is breast tissue, too.

With Cancer on the mind this month,

we thought we might give you some tips on how to watch for

SKIN CANCER-

and the signs you need to get checked.

Warning Signs: The ABCDEs of Melanoma

Moles, brown spots and growths on the skin are usually harmless — but not always. Anyone who has more than 100 moles is at greater risk for melanoma. The first signs can appear in one or more atypical moles. That's why it's so important to get to know your skin very well and to recognize any changes in the moles on your body. Look for the ABCDEs of melanoma, and if you see one or more, make an appointment with a physician immediately.

	Asymmetry If you draw a line through this mole, the two halves will not match.
	Border The borders of an early melanoma tend to be uneven. The edges may be scalloped or notched.
	Color Having a variety of colors is another warning signal. A number of different shades of brown, tan or black could appear. A melanoma may also become red, blue or some other color.
	Diameter Melanomas usually are larger in diameter than the size of the eraser on your pencil (1/4 inch or 6 mm), but they may sometimes be smaller when first detected.
	Evolving Any change — in size, shape, color, elevation, or another trait, or any new symptom such as bleeding, itching or crusting — points to danger. The BEST way to know if you need to see a Dermatologist is the ask yourself the 3 important questions: Is the spot I see NEW? GROWING? or CHANGING? if it is one for more of the following, go get your skin checked. Keep your eyes peeled for more ways to protect yourself for different cancers.

Cancer Checks

Its Cancer Awareness month,

Which means it is a great time for us to think about keeping oursleves healthy by scheduling the recommended Cancer Checks. The following are recommended procedures for women. Make sure to read them and schedule the appointments you need to keep yourself healthy, happy, and Beautiful!

Pap Smear for Cervical Cancer

A Pap smear is a highly effective test that screens for cervical cancer in women. The test involves the collecting of cells from the cervix to be examined under a microscope. It is not a diagnostic test, however. That means that if any abnormalities are discovered, more testing will be needed to make a formal diagnosis.

Pelvic Exam for Gynecologic Cancers

A regular pelvic exam is necessary for all women. A pelvic exam is one of the first steps in diagnosing several conditions such as gynecologic cancers and sexually transmitted diseases. How often a woman needs a pelvic exam varies depending on her risk factors for certain conditions and previous exam findings. A pelvic exam is often accompanied by the Pap smear.

Mammogram for Breast Cancer

Women who are over 40 or at high risk for developing breast cancer need to have a regular mammogram. A screening mammogram is able to detect breast abnormalities that could signal breast cancer. Aside from regular mammograms, women of all ages should perform monthly breast self exams to check for abnormalities.

Colonoscopy or Other Recommended Colon Cancer Screening Test

Several tests are available to screen for colon cancer. Your doctor will recommend a colon cancer screening test based on your colon cancer risk factors, age and general health. Common examples of colon cancer screening tests include colonoscopy and fecal occult blood tests.

Colon cancer screening normally begins for men and women who are over 50. However, those who are at an increased risk for the disease may begin screening earlier.

Clinical Skin Exam for Skin Cancer

You should check your skin for abnormalities every month at home. Each year, however, you should have a clinical skin exam. During a clinical skin exam, a doctor visually

Fall Skin Care Tips!

Fall Skin Care Tips

As we head into the fall months, the weather changes and so does our skin. The dry cold weather, combined with the dry furnace air tends to dry out our skin and make it flaky, chapped, and not looking our best! Its important to make the right changes in our skin care regimen to keep our skin looking as healthy, youthful, and beautiful as you are!

1. Reassess your Body Cleanser. In the spring and summer, fruity body washes are popular treat, but as you move into fall, you’ll want to make sure that it isn’t too drying for your skin. Make sure to pick a body wash that is soap free, as well as moisturizing. This will help to keep your skin moisturized and avoid the chapping of colder weather.

2. Moisturize daily. Find yourself a good daily moisturizer and apply it to the entire body daily. Use a liberal amount is area if high movement such as elbows and knees. This will help prevent the dry flaking skin that dry fall and winter weather brings. Some of our favorite Moisturizers are Bioelements (they have a bunch, each one to target a different skin type), L’ANZA’s Healing Moisture Hand treatment, Eufora’s Body blends face and body moisturizer, and Hemps body lotion! All can be found at the Kutting Edge Salon and Spa

3. Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate. Make sure to exfoliate your skin 2-3 times weekly. By buffing away the dry dead skin cells that are sitting on top of your skin, you can let your soft healthy skin show through. Your soft healthy skin is more likely to absorb your moisturizer and give you the optimum results!

4. Help heal the cracks. As our skin dries out, sometimes cracking can occur in places such as hands, elbows, and the heels on the feet. If this occurs, we recommend applying a liberal amount of petroleum jelly (Try Vaseline or Aquaphor) nightly until it is healed completely. It may help to cover the area after you apply the ointment to help it absorb.

5. Don’t forget the sunscreen! Even though the sun isn’t burning bright, the UV rays are still shining through the clouds and you are still accruing sun damage. It is best to apply an SPF 30 or higher daily to all sun exposed areas, and reapply throughout the day as needed. We suggest finding a daily moisturizer with a sunscreen in it! This way, you are saving a step and are more likely to remember!

6. Take care of those luscious lips! Don’t let your lips be forgotten, as the weather gets chilly! Make sure to keep a good moisturizing lip balm on those lips at all times to avoid chapping and cracking (a balm with a sunscreen is even better!) And to keep them super soft, use a lip exfoliant. We like Bioelements Lip Buff- you can pick it up in our salon!

The Shampoo Epiphany

Now, it may seem a little unconventional,
but we promise it is a tip that will change your life as a Curly Girl forever.

Here's Lorraine's "Shampoo Epiphany!"

"In the bad old days, I would subject my scalp and hair to a vigorous lathering once or twice a week, for no good reason except force of habit. Afterward, for the frist twenty-four hours, my hair would appear to float in space like a helium balloon, defying the laws of gravity, because I had ruffled the surface cuticle and dehydrated the curls.

Another three days would go by before my hair had recovered enough from its trauma that I was ready to admit we were related. Then we'd happily coexist for the rest of the week, until it was time (according to my self-imposed regimen) for my next shampoo. And the vicious cycle would begin all over again.

I followed this routine unquestioningly, because I'd never found any care instructions that addressed the specific needs of curly, as opposed to straight, hair. Then on fateful morning I looked in the mirror and realized my hair looked fabulous. According to my schedule, I was due for a shampoo, but I couldn't bear to mess with success. I dared myself to wait another day. One stretched into a second, then a third, until I'd managed to hold our for almost three weeks. My hair had never looked better, so I decided to initiate an experiment: I would declare my hair a shampoo-free zone and see how long I could refrain from washing it with detergent.

Now shampoo is a total no-no in my home. I don't use it at all anymore, not even a drop. I work up a sweat running most mornings, I eat in smoky European restaurants, and I swim in the ocean not far from my home. Yet my friends assure me that I pass the sniff test. My hair and scalp don't smell- and my hair has never looked better.

Kutting Edge's Thoughts: It's okay to use a NON LATHERING cleanser for your hair- if you make sure it is sulfate and sodium sulfate free! Make sure this is the case if you decide to wash- keep it gentle and don't be afraid to water down a cleanser if you feel it needs it. Always follow with a good moisturizing conditioner, preferably one that is thick and rich. Make sure to read your labels."

first...DO NOT COMB YOUR HAIR AGAIN!!! throw away your combs and brushes!!! when you comb through your hair you are breaking up your curls. your curls will form in a ribbon type look the way they want naturally. in the shower run your fingers softly through your curls to remove tangles.

next...DO NOT 'WRAP' YOUR HAIR IN A TOWEL!!! use an old t-shirt to 'scrunch' the excess water from your hair after your shower. the roughness of the towel roughs up your curls and makes them more frizzy.

to style...use a clear gel and again 'scrunch' it into your hair. DO NOT OVER WORK YOUR CURLS WITH YOUR HANDS!! let them dry naturally or use a diffuser on low. i love the devafuser. the fingers get right to your scalp to dry your curls from the scalp to your ends.

Which Curl Are You?

No two curls are alike, making it difficult to generalize about curly hair. In order to care for your curls properly its important to know what type of curls you have. Look over the three types of curls and decide what characteristics bet fit your hair.

Corkscrew:
You know you have corkscrew hair if you have...
1. Curls are tightly wound as a French poodle's if cut too short
2. Lots of small coils of curls
3. Super dry hair that crackles with electricity
4. A high frizz factor
5. Very dry skin
6. Curls that tend to stand out from your head instead or lying flat
7. Hair that soaks up as much conditioner as you feed it

Botticelli Hair

You know you have Botticelli hair if you have...
1. Curls that vary in size,
2. Curls that fall gracefully down your head instead of sticking straight out
3. Texture that is medium-fine
4. Hair that is brittle and easily damaged
5. Curls that sometimes cannot be coaxed into making an appearance because they're weighed down by the top layer of hair

Wavy Curls

You know you have wavy hair if you have:
1. Hair you've always believed was straight
2. Hair that on humid days is surrounded by a halo of frizz
3. Hair that occasionally develops a natural wave, which you've tried to blow-dry out
4. Hair that has a tendency to look unkept
5. Hair that is flat on the crown
6. Had wavy hair when you were very young

Another way to tell what type of curly girl you are, is by the "Spring Factor," The difference in length of a curl when it falls naturally and when its extended. Here's how to measure: Pull a strand of dry curls down against your shoulder or neck to its full length. Leave your finger at the point where the strand touches. Now let go. With a ruler, measure the distance between your finger and where your curl naturally ends. The number is your personal spring factor.

Results:    

Corkscrew curls: 9-12 inch spring

Botticelli curls: 5-8 inch spring

Wavy Curls: 2-4 inch spring

New Receptionist

Kutting Edge would like to welcome a new member to our team:

Megan Andrus

Megan will be joining us as our new part time receptionist and we are excited to have her. Megan is a cache valley girl, born and raised in Wellsville, Utah. She was married to her sweetheart Zach Andrus in August of 2007. They recently added to the family a baby girl named Oakley in April of 2010. Oakley is their little angel and they LOVE her to death! Another member of their family is Duke their chocolate lab. Megan explains that he is “more like a moose, but we still love him.”

Megan Graduated from Utah State University with her bachelor’s degree in exercise science in December of 2009. She enjoys dancing, shopping, and hanging out with her family.

Joining the Kutting Edge team was a great way for Megan to have some fun adult interaction while still being able to be a mom to her little girl.

Megan we are excited have you as a part of our team and look forward to getting to know you!

Instead of holding a big baby shower for our 5 friends with babies on the way, we opted for a big celebratory dinner instead.

Ann has joined our team as a new Master Esthetician offering services including:
Waxing, Peels, Facials, Stone Therapy, Masques, Body Wraps, and Non-Surgical Facial lifts.

A little history: Ann has been a licensed cosmetologist for 32 years. She graduated from the Weber State Cosmetology Program. In 2002 She attended the Bridgerland CNA Program. Looking for a new challenge and change, Ann went back to Bridgerland only this time in the Esthetics's program. She loves the beauty and feel of youthful looking skin.

She explains that "As we age, our skin changes. I wanted to improve the look and feel of my own skin. After several treatments people began to notice the change and wanted to know my secret. Now I am excited to share my knowledge and help others enjoy more radiant, soft, beautiful skin."

Come in and see Ann, here at the Kutting Edge Salon and Spa. She is working Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:00 am to 2:00pm. If you come in during the month of July, she will give you 10% off any service of your choice.
